I have a friend who has struggled with life for a long time. Back a couple of year she was worried about being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, she didn't want to have the symptoms or the label,or any other thing that made her feel more broken. It made her so upset, ashamed and sad, and she felt so out of control. To me the effect of seeing her feel desperately alone and broken is more than i can take. If you look at the description of bipolar I think you will find we all possess these characteristics in varying degrees. And we all do not want to see that either. I found many bipolar disorder qualities in myself, though I haven't been diagnosed...but have suspected it. Through discussion I have found that what we know of as the characteristics of bipolar disorder is more generally visible in many people in the population at large and it seems a to be a kind reaction to social conditioning to protect us from emotional abuse.To me, in this condition there is a child trying to protect itself from forces so much bigger than itself and so destructive. It may be that in the end the body helps by producing chemicals to help balance and comfort. But maybe that becomes habit for the body and mind and then the behaviour looks odd when you see it outside of the originally abusive conditions. Whatever the cause, I feel solidarity with people labeled bipolar, and I wrote the song as a support against labels and in support of people.
